One of the reasons we liked traveling so much was the opportunity to meet new people. Most neighborhoods don't take the time to get to know who is living right next door. We wave politely as we are running out the door. Last weekend a couple of families in my neighborhood decided they wanted to try and change that.
So they handed out flyers with a time, and promised good BBQ. I could tell that some people had hesitations about coming. It's not normal to really socialize with people who live near you. It didn't take long before everyone started showing up. Even more surprising was how open everyone was to introduce themselves. Although there were organized events everyone seemed continent with just hanging out and getting to know each other.
Kids can see a movie a hundred times, but if you put it up on a big screen outside it completely changes everything for them. It might be a lot of work to set up the screen, hook up the projector, and DVD player, but giving the kids something to wind down at the end of the night, and give all the parents a break made it totally worth it. If your neighborhood doesn't have a block party at least once a year, I highly recommend putting one on. It's doesn't take a lot just someone willing to hand out the flyers.
